Auschwitz
Trains that were used to transport the Jews

I picked this picture because it gives a good visual to the story. I also picked it because at one point Shmuel talked about how him and his family were packed onto trains and they didn't know where they were going.

I also chose it because it shows how badly these people were treated and how crammed and dark the trains were. It also shows it during the winter and how the malnourished people would have frozen on a metal and wood train car with no source of warmth.

The way the visual helps is the same as I wrote on the other picture.

Picture 1: Main Gate to Aushwitz

A photo of the entrance to Auschwitz Concentration Camp
The main gate to Aushwitz Concentration Camp. The sign reads "ARBEIT MACH FREI", which translates to "Work makes free", although it probably means "Work for freedom".

I chose this picture because it is the front gate to Auschwitz and it directly links to "Out-With" in the book and gives a better idea of what the camp looked like.

I think a visual aid helps to understand what the camp actually looked like, since in the book it just refers to it as hundreds of tiny huts inside a giant fence with what looked like telephone poles.

The London Gazette

German Boy dies in Gas Chamber!

Bruno, a 9-year-old boy who lived in Berlin moved to a House next to the Auschwitz Concentration Camp where he befriended a young Jew who's name is unknown. They were traveling back to Berlin after his mother protested that a concentration camp was no place to raise a child. Two days before they were set to leave, Bruno was told by the Jew that his father had gone missing and he needed Bruno to help him find his father. The next day, Bruno met his friend at the fence and changed into a pair of prison gowns that the Jewish boy had brought him. They then went to look for the boys father. Unfortunately they decided to go on the day the Jewish boy's section of the camp was sent to be exterminated, young Bruno was caught up in the crowd and marched to a gas chamber where he died. If you ask me, I find it extremely ironic, I feel terribly sad that this boy perished, but it's just a terrible case of karma, considering his dad ran the camp.
I wish all the Germans were like this, and not Nazis, then this war would never have started.

Newspaper article: 1 (Not mine)

I chose this article because I thought it showed well what happened during that time. It's short and gets the point across.
I also chose this article because it connected well with the story, it says how many Jews were killed (three million) as well as how they were killed, who killed them (the Nazis), and who helped the refugees (the Russians).

Journal Entry: Bruno

Today I met a boy on the other side of the big fence, his name is Shmuel and he has the same birthday as me!

I was so excited when he told me this. I've never met anyone with the same birthday as me! He seems very sad although I don't know why, he wears the same clothes every day and smells like he hasn't showered in months. He looks as if he only eats a piece if bread each day, I have to remember to bring him some food.

On another note, Shmuel claimed we are in Poland, although I believe we're still in Germany. But it doesn't matter, now that I have a friend at Out-With things are going to be a lot more fun. I can't wait to meet him again tomorrow!
